Since our beginning in 2022, Sonny Horses 4 Kids has continued expanding its mission to support children and families throughout Ventura County. Today, our Sonny Horses 4 Kids Feeding Kids program helps provide nutritious food and caring support to children and families facing food insecurity. Through compassion, community partnerships, and your generous support, we are making a meaningful difference—one family at a time.

Your generosity helps us recognize and honor the extraordinary law enforcement officers, firefighters, and first responders who go above and beyond in service to our communities. Through monthly awards and public recognition, we celebrate their courage, compassion, dedication, and leadership while strengthening the bond between these everyday heroes and the children and families they proudly serve. Together, we remind our heroes that their service is appreciated, their sacrifices are remembered, and their commitment inspires the next generation.

It is with great pride and gratitude that we recognize Officer James Kitka and Police Service Dog Al for their extraordinary courage, exceptional valor, faithful service, and steadfast commitment to protecting the community of Oxnard.
On April 20th, 2026 officers responded to a report of an armed man threatening employees with a machete before entering a busy restaurant. Upon arriving, officers safely evacuated restaurant patrons and spent nearly four minutes attempting to peacefully de-escalate the situation while two employees remained trapped inside the business. After the subject ignored repeated commands, armed himself with the machete, and charged officers—resulting in an officer-involved shooting—he remained armed and refused to surrender despite officers' repeated efforts to have him drop the weapon so they could safely provide medical aid.
Recognizing the continued threat to officers, first responders, and the public, K9 Officer James Kitka deployed Police Service Dog Al to apprehend the armed suspect. Without hesitation, Al engaged the suspect, placing himself directly in harm's way. During the apprehension, the suspect attacked Al with the machete, inflicting a laceration to Al's upper lip. Despite being injured, Al's actions helped officers safely disarm the suspect and take him into custody, bringing a dangerous and volatile incident to a successful conclusion.
Police Service Dogs willingly place themselves between danger and the officers and citizens they serve. Al's courage, determination, and selfless actions exemplify the very highest traditions of police service. His bravery undoubtedly reduced the risk to responding officers and protected innocent lives during an exceptionally dangerous encounter.
Congratulations Officer James Kitka and and Police Service Dog Al as our Sonny Horses 4 Heroes Award recipient for the month of August. As a community we are grateful for your service, bravery, courage, and on-going commitment in keeping our children and families safe.

The Sonny Horses 4 Heroes program is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and first responders who selflessly serve our community. As a proud part of the Sonny Horses 4 Kids initiative, this program not only honors our heroes but also helps foster meaningful connections between our children and the first responders of Ventura County.
We invite the community to take part by nominating outstanding officers and first responders who exemplify the highest standards of service, integrity, and compassion. Each month, Sonny Boy, the Sonny Horses 4 Kids team, and senior department leadership review the nominations and select one deserving hero to receive this distinguished honor.
Honorees are recognized with a commemorative plaque and a dinner at the restaurant of their choice, as a small but heartfelt way to say thank you for going above and beyond in service to others.
